THESAURUS INDICUS, VOLUMEN II, TÍTULOS XIV-XVII
Diego de Avendaño (1594-1688), un segoviano que ingresó a la Compañía de Jesús en Lima (29-9-1594), de la que fue su provincial en el Perú y posteriormente rector del famoso Colegio San Pablo. Estos cargos le proporcionaron un especial conocimiento de la realidad peruana del momento, que le permitió ser autor, entre otras varias obras, del monumental Thesaurus Indicus (2 vols., Meursio, Amberes, 1668). En el pretendía, según él mismo dice, ser guía de conciencias para los asuntos de Indias y severo censor de los abusos de los gobernantes. En tal sentido, dedica el primer volumen al gobierno temporal de las colonias (Títulos I-X) y el segundo al bienestar espiritual de las mismas (Títulos XI-XX), estudiando en ellos las obligaciones morales de las correspondientes autoridades, civiles y religiosas. La obra resulta indispensable para la comprensión de la vida colonial. Habiendo permanecido durante siglos prácticamente en el olvido, Muñoz García ha puesto ya al alcance de los estudiosos los trece primeros títulos del Thesaurus, en traducción castellana, anotados y con estudios introductorio que ilustran los principales conceptos de cada volumen. Ahora lo hace, igualmente, con los títulos XIV-XVII, dedicados a los párrocos de Indias. The Parish Priests of Indians. Thesaurus Indicus, Volume II, Titles XIV-XVII. Diego de Avendaño (1594-1688), a Segovian who joined the Society of Jesus in Lima (29-9-1594), of which he was the Provincial in Peru and later rector of the famous San Pablo School. These positions provided him with a special knowledge of the Peruvian reality of the time, which allowed him to be the author, among other works, of the monumental Thesaurus Indicus (2 vols., Meursio, Antwerp, 1668). Through it, he intended, according to he himself, to be a guide of consciences for the affairs of the Indies and to severely condemn the abuses of the rulers. In this sense, he dedicates the first volume to the temporary government of the colonies (Titles I-X) and the second to the spiritual well-being of the colonies (Titles XI-XX), studying in them the moral obligations of the corresponding civil and religious authorities. The work is essential for understanding colonial life. Having remained practically in oblivion for centuries, Muñoz García has already made the first thirteen titles of the Thesaurus available to scholars, in its Spanish translation, annotated and with introductory studies that illustrate the main concepts of each volume. Likewise, he now does so with titles XIV-XVII, dedicated to the parish priests of the Indies.
