Publicado por Romain Rolland el 24 de septiembre de 1914 en el Journal de Genève mientras colaboraba como voluntario en la Cruz Roja, Mas allá de la contienda es el manifiesto pacifista más célebre de la Gran Guerra, comparable a Yo acuso de Zola.
Este texto excepcional, que instaba a los beligerantes a ganar altura moral y comprender la magnitud de la catástrofe, provocó enseguida numerosas reacciones violentas y rencorosas hacia su autor, tanto entre los franceses como entre los alemanes. La gran lucidez de sus pensamientos de paz y libertad, el ideal de acción no violenta y de comunión entre los pueblos fueron recompensados, sin embargo, al año siguiente con la obtención del premio Nobel de Literatura.
