Enoch Soames es un poeta decadentista tan mediocre como pedante, autor de tres obras que, muy a su pesar, no le han procurado fama ni prestigio alguno. Convencido de ser un escritor de talento injustamente ig- norado, sueña con el reconocimiento que, quizá, reciba de manera póstuma. Un día, mientras cena en el Soho londinense con Beerbohm, el involuntario testigo de sus desgracias, un personaje con pinta de pen- denciero que a rma ser el diablo le ofre- ce la oportunidad de viajar al futuro para comprobar qué le depara la posteridad. Publicado originalmente en 1916 en The Century Magazine, este relato fue inclui- do más tarde en la recopilación Seven Men (1919), así como en la mítica Antología de la literatura fantástica (1940) de Borges, Casares y Ocampo. A medio camino en- tre la sátira, el naturalismo y la fantasía, Enoch Soames es una de las piezas de la literatura humorística más ingeniosas e imperecederas.
