Carnaval y otros cuentos recoge once relatos publicados tras la muerte de Isak Dinesen en 1962. Estos cuentos fueron escritos en diferentes etapas de la vida de la autora y muestran su amplia variedad de intereses literarios y personales, así como su magistral técnica. Algunos de estos relatos están entre los mejores y más originales de su producción, como por ejemplo «Caballos fantasmas» y «El oso y el beso».
